The color of defeat

There was a sea of orange and brown downtown in the parking lots surrounding the stadium. The air was cold, but the mood was good, everyone was ready for a good matchup. No one, however was ready for the game that gave us the seventh disappointing loss of the season. Some could even argue that we did not even show up to play on our own field.
The game almost…made me consider becoming a fan of another football team. (ok maybe not). But I was angry. I was mad because of all of the fans that come week after week, remaining excited about the season, got nothing. All of the hype for the 2008 season was officially over. The magic and luck that we’d seen in recent weeks, fizzled.
Sunday provided no magic, no excitement, and certainly no reason to sit in the cold for hours. The game was managed poorly and players seemed confused as to where they were. But it was not the fault of the players. Crazy statement, I know. Sunday was partly due to the result of quicksand. I am referencing the movie, “The Replacements” It’s when your team tries too hard and messes up even more - It’s mental. The more Braylon tries, the more he drops. The horrible thing about quicksand in this regard, is that it is contagious. It spreads to the rest of the team. Fumbles, interceptions, and missed opportunities to win the game - make the team reluctant to push through the challenges faced after mistakes.
These mistakes trickle down from the coaches and management. I feel that this Browns organization is really unsure about how to run a good camp that thrives on effective game preparation week to week. I can’t say that they don’t wanna win, but they are certainly unsure about how to keep the players inspired and how reduce the egocentric attitudes in the locker room. The team is more about being ok as players rather than playing as a dominant team.
One team that continues to win since “The Drive - 87″ is Denver. They continue to churn out playoff appearances, good running backs, fantastic offensive lines and elusive quarterbacks. Their defense is always tough and they play physical. Their fans can actually believe in Super Bowl appearances. Why? Their organization continues to build on past success. Even with players having trouble with the law and injuries, their players quickly return to have great games/stats. It’s because they know how to prepare for games. It is because their organization gets all of the necessary pieces in place to create a solid team that focuses on winning.
So my question to the Browns organization is - When? When will these disappointing seasons end? When can I not say “Next Year”? When can we do what’s expected of us? We were given so many prime time stages for 2008 and so far, they have been very entertaining - even playing to our potential. The other games unfortunately are dismal and borderline pathetic.
Paul Brown never would have envisioned this for his team. The people growing up watching Jim Brown play, probably envisioned several Super Bowl Championships and/or appearances leading up to now. Browns fans in general envisioned us being just as competitive year after year as the Steelers. No matter how dedicated we are as fans, this is getting too tiresome. We can’t even provide fun banter toward Steelers fans anymore because we have proved nothing other than the fact that we try not to lose all of our games.
It is about time someone rings the bell within the Browns’ head office. Something needs to be done to bring back the pride and professionalism that this organization was founded on. The color of orange and brown really meant something back then. As of now, there is not much to defend the fan support this orgnization is getting.
