Friday Night Magic Decklist - R/G Fury
I have been slowly getting back into tournaments within the Standard format. Even though there are some very dominant decks in the format, I really like going Rogue. Up until this point I did try a few decks - U/W Fish and Kithkin. While both are very fast and can potentially kill on the 5th or 6th turn, I found that going toward decks with heavier red removal allows me to handle a larger variety of decks. The deck I will cover first is R/G Fury. It is a deck I played for the most recent FNM. I played against very good players and good decks. Kithkin, Kithkin, Doran, and of course Faeries.
R/G Fury - The tournament build:
Creatures
4 Birds of Paradise
4 Wall of Roots
4 Boartusk Liege
4 Boggart Ram Gang
3 Furystoke Giant
2 Wort, The Raid Mother
Instants
4 Incinerate
4 Manamorphose
Sorcery
3 Empty the Warrens
4 Firespout
2 Harmonize
Land
4 Treetop Villiage
4 Karplusan Forest
4 Ancient Amphitheater
2 Fire-Lit Thicket
5 Forest
3 Mountain
S/B
4 Gleeful Sabotage
3 Dawncharm
2 Terror
2 Primal Command
1 Akroma Angel of Fury
3 Tattermunge Duo
Even though Boartusk Liege and Boggart Ram Gang are a beating, Furystoke Giant and Firespout get my MVP vote. In between matches I was shocked to discover from the people I played that no one was playing those cards or even familiar with what they did.
When I played against the Kithkin weenies, I could play a patient game, only dropping a few Ram Gangs for early damage and wipe the board clean with the “spout” after I drop a Liege. If I didn’t already get the Gangs on the table, I can Manamorphose a few times to storm up Empty the Warrens and followup with the Furystoke for the kill. Tapping 6 tokens for a 12 damage smack or board clearing is wrong but it feels so right. And I am not even going to mention how amazing it is to use Wort’s conspire ability with Primal Command or Harmonize. (…oops, I think I just did.)
I always wondered why R/G Big Mana looked so fun to play, and now I know why as early Wall of Roots drops are lovely against aggro decks since you can increase the mana advantage while building good defenders. And while I am not using the Siege Gang Commander for tokens & burn, I still get the damage when stacked with the Liege, FuryStoke and Wort. Yeah I know I am not playing the Garruk Wildspeaker, but I don’t have them. I know the Planeswalker abilities would add some more speed and power to an already fast deck. But if I could make a less expensive change to squeeze in a pinch more early damage, this is how the deck would look.
Creatures
4 Tattermage Maniac *
4 Wall of Roots
4 Boartusk Liege
4 Boggart Ram Gang
4 Furystoke Giant
Instants
4 Incinerate
Sorcery
4 Empty the Warrens
4 Firespout
4 Rite of Flame*
2 Burn Trail
Land
4 Treetop Villiage
4 Karpulsan Forest
4 Ancient Amplitheater
2 Fire-Lit Thicket
5 Forest
3 Mountain
For this build I like the how the Maniac can jump up to a 4/3 with the Boartusk Liege. It forces early decisions from my opponent. With just those 3 R/G creatures on the table, it really can be quite mean. And even though I got needed cards with the Harmonize and Manamorphose, I liked how the Dragonstorm decks used Rite of Flame to up the storm count of Empty the Warrens. Taking out the Wort at this point is still debatable, but I do like the conspire ability in Burntrail. So in the next week of testing we’ll see how this new version plays.
